What to consider when shopping for a home safe:
What size of home safe do I need?
I always tell customers when they come in the store that a safe is an investment. Make sure you buy a home safe that gives not only room for what you need now but what you will need in the future. You are going to end up putting more in it than what you expect to. In store we have small home safes that can be hidden under your bed all the way up to home safes that are the size of a small gun safe. Home safes come in a variety of sizes that can typically be put in just about anywhere you want to. Check out our home safes here : Home Safe Collection
Where do you want to install your home safe?
Good news for people that are limited on space but still want a safe; Home Safes fit just about anywhere. We have clients put them in their bedroom closest, garages, inside other safes, in their RV, in their wet bars and even under their office desk. (Note: If you are looking for a commercial safe click here: Commercial Safes) Selecting the location of your safe is going to help you determine how big of a safe your space can accommodate. Just keep in mind you will want to add more to your safe once you get it home than you think. Give yourself room to expand and really use your investment. Don’t buy one that is too small or just right for right now. Before you visit the store grab a tape measure and measure the height, width and depth of the space you have so our team can help you get the safe that fits perfect for your space.
Here are a few home safes we've recently installed
What lock does my safe need?
There are three types of locks safes typically are equipped with
- Mechanical Lock (Dial Lock)
- Electronic Locks (Keypad Lock)
- Biometric
The most common sold type of lock in our stores in the electronic locks. However the locking system is really a matter of personal preference. There are several things to consider if you are torn on what kind of lock to get. Keypad locks are typically lit so you can see in the dark and they allow quick access. Biometric locks are typically more expensive but you can unlock your safe to open it with literally a touch of the finger. Mechanical locks are old school and typically have less issues over time but with that you’re giving up quick access and being able to see if it’s dark or your vision gets bad. All locks have improved greatly over the years, so you really can’t go wrong with whatever locking system you choose.
Fire Rating?
Let me start by saying no safe is 100% fire proof. Safes are fire rated. Meaning home safes and gun safes are tested to see how long they can withstand a certain temperature of fire before the contents inside them will be ruined or the safes internal temperature reaches a certain degree (usually 350 degrees Fahrenheit) and are given a rating for how long that takes. Liberty Safes typically have a fire rating of 1200 F, Browning Safes typically have a 1200F-1680F and Rhino Metals typically have a 1400F. We have a several different fire ratings here in our store, heres a few of our most commonly sold by each manufacturer.
Liberty Home Series 8 or 12: 60 Minutes at 1200F
Prosteel Deluxe Home Safe 19: 120 Minutes at 1200F or 100 Minutes at 1680F
Liberty Premium Home Safe: 2 Hours at 1200F
Long Horn Series: 30 Minutes to 1 Hours at 1400F
Are home safes waterproof?
No, no safes are waterproof. There are some safes on the market that say they are waterproof but so far no one has been able to prove that claim for a large safe for inside your home. We do have some small portable safes that even float that can with stand water. Click here to see those: Vaultek
